Hello, my name’s Andrew Moore. Welcome to my page revolving around ESL, Business English Teaching, and Communication.

This is now one of the services I’m offering to the international public; Business English Teaching and soon, my own 10-lesson course on the topic.

Now, everything I do revolves around English (content creation, education, optimization, and communication). I didn’t think I’d ever return to teaching, but happily, here I am- looking for those motivated professionals that I can help.

Business English Teacher with 10 years of Full-Time ESL Experience in Europe

My deep past and most recent experience have led me to stitch together, and therein better understand some of the unique challenges facing students from many different accents, cultures, strata, and levels- this, I truly consider an honor. (Especially, when my instruction/coaching helps them to realize a dream- like obtaining a particular position they want. What could be more satisfying?)

I have had the experience of not only teaching business English to students from all different levels but also helping professionals such as doctors who are outside of the US refine their presentations to be delivered within the US. these professionals have included doctors, lawyers, and other professionals.

Also, I had the honor of building a curriculum while I was promoted to director of the school in Prague the Czech Republic. and once I moved to Spain I was offered the position of teaching the highest level of Cambridge English which (ironically) none of the British English teachers could teach. so the one American did and that truly was an honor and a challenge as the Proficiency level of Cambridge English is the mark for international academic English.

I have found that one of the biggest issues for business English students is to refine and Pare down their statements and questions into what I call quote the efficiency of speech on quote Generally students like to really practice their English and take it for a run however this can cause problems and confusion for not only themselves but their listener or professional counterparts.

What is a Business English Teacher?

An Experienced, Double-Certified ESL Business English Teacher

I have over 10 years of full-time ESL and Business English Teaching experience. Most of that was in the classrooms of Prague and Valencia, Spain. Now, you

What Does Business English Do?

Business English helps you develop your career by better understanding your colleagues and co-workers who all come together to use English in a wide range of professional capacities. I have a lot of experience working with professionals from around the world thanks to the Cambly.com platform (where I hold a 4.8/5 star rating). that has been an eye-opening experience after teaching for 10 years in both Prague and Valencia Spain.

now I have a better understanding of just how the greater lexicon of English works in businesses in many different verticals around the world and interculturally.

What Is Taught In A Business English Class?

yes of course we work on structure and presentation ways to succinctly pass ideas forward but also in other subtle ways of communication and the do’s and don’ts when dealing with other cultures and sometimes hard-to-understand accents or ill-placed efforts at idiomatic speech.

this is entirely geared towards the international market for ESL students who are ready to ‘up their game’ when it comes to communications with other working professional English speakers from around the world.

How Do I Teach Business English Online?

However, now I also now have plenty of experience teaching online, to professional students from all over the world.

These professional students have included those from the medical field, many IT and physical engineers, company owners and CEOs, as well as even a tour guide to a foreign nuclear power plant and adult children from a former Director General to the U.N.

Business English Conversation

Conversation lessons are how I cut my teeth teaching English when I first earned my TEFL certificate and stood in front of my first classroom in downtown Prague, The (then) Czech Republic.

I’ve found this to be a very effective methodology, being that new vocabulary is introduced and then used within a topical context.

It’s generally agreed upon that a new word needs to be used at least 7 times before it becomes part of an individual’s useful vocabulary. Conversation lessons, backed by handouts are a great way to make this happen- it also tends to identify other problems (grammar, pronunciation, etc.) the student may or may not be aware of.

Business English Students Are a Joy to Teach

Is usually a joy. The students are usually professionals with a keen desire to improve their communication at work. This is achieved by both understanding and being understood better as they improve their skills.

This means that they can present ideas well enough in short declarative sentences taking a page from Hemingway’s style and this will support the efficiency of speech this technique can be easily applied to their emails and other forms of business communication and end-user or person that in the conversation with them will appreciate this sort of staccato efficiency.

When they really want to take their English for a run so to speak I encourage them to do so after the meeting is finished, all of the pertinent facts are in place, and then they can relax and take the client out to dinner, for example.

Business English Courses

This is something that I want to develop for my present and future students. I have been involved with curriculum development and SOPs (standards of procedures) for businesses and even an office procedure manual for a California school district in the past.

While I was living and working in Prague I helped develop the curriculum at my language school there, which led to my promotion to Director.

As I’ve already created a course on ‘How to Move to Mexico,’ I think it would be wise if I developed a 10-lesson course on Business English for the international ESL market. this is something that my students could purchase and use on their own and or something that I could help them work through the course together, on a 1 to 1 basis.

…I’m beginning to gather the materials and lesson ideas for this as we speak…

Business English ESL

For the most part, (ESL) English as a Second Language learners want to improve their lot in life and they know that besides their regular college education or professional aptitudes, English is the one language that they should focus on.

What Are Some Business English Topics?

Here are some common business English situations or contacts to consider the use of the language: Marketing, In A Meeting, On The Phone, Email Drafting, Introductions, Engineering, IT, Sales, Accounting, Human Resources, Administration, Small Talk, The Executive Suite, and How to Reach Out.

Of course, it’s important to consider that each of these positions will have a different body of common lexicon. so these are often at least student-dependent but they can be uncovered and added to practical vocabulary for the student in a short amount of time.

Phrases And Idioms

I make the distinction here between common phrases and idioms. For the most part, idioms are, in their true form, location-dependent. For example, if you’re from Boston Massachusetts you will say the word Wicked probably 10 times a day. if you are a 14-year-old girl from Southern California you’ll say, like, like, like, like, like all day long- and that’s fine. As a business professional in any capacity, that could be death at an interview.

So what happens is, over time an idiom can bounce out of its location and join the general Global lexicon of English. if we take the case of the word like into account it has made its way into movies that have been fed all over the world and so at times, I find a student from any number of countries repeating the word like in their spoken lessons. When I discovered this I try and correct them as quickly as possible. for this reason, I focus on common phrases that could also be considered idioms in some cases. however, you can see the distinction that I’ve made here between the two.

Interpersonal Communication (for Business)

I often see two separate issues with students one being that they of course need to improve their comfort/fluency with English and two their interpersonal business communication skills. these are not the same things. once clear understanding of interpersonal communication skills for business are understood they can of course be applied in their own native language. I work with students to help them understand and maximize the benefit of these skills and many different formats.

To me, I’ve delineated English into four formats you might call them something else but I referred to them as Reading Writing listening, and speaking. interpersonal business English skills can be learned and applied to all four really.

How is Using English Like Riding a Motorcycle?

In closing, I often offer English as a comparison to riding a motorcycle. for example, if you ride a motorcycle too fast you can lose control and if you ride it too slow of course you will fall over. This is my basic analogy as I encourage students to find a pacing of their English usage that is best for them so that they can be most effective and clear in the delivery of their ideas.

I also suggest that business English students and students, in general, think in blocks of 3 to 5 pieces of information to deliver at a time. This helps…
